If you're buying Sherwin-Williams paint, use their free app, Color Expert. If you're choosing between Sherwin-Williams and other brands, and want to see them on a photo of your own room with its real light, that's where Muro earns its price.
A few things up front. ColorSnap Visualizer doesn't exist under that name anymore: Sherwin-Williams' app is now called Color Expert. I built Muro, so read this as the maker's view, not a neutral review. I've tested Muro myself. I haven't run the two apps side by side, so what I say about Color Expert comes from Sherwin-Williams' own App Store listing, checked on September 28, 2026.

Why Color Expert might be all you need
It's free, it's made by the company whose paint you're buying, and it does the basic job: take a photo of your room and see Sherwin-Williams colors on the walls. It also does exteriors, which Muro doesn't focus on. About 7,300 people have rated it 4.6 in the US App Store.
If you've already settled on Sherwin-Williams and you just want a look before buying a sample, you don't need to pay for anything. Use it.
When Muro makes more sense
You're choosing between brands
This is the main reason. Say you're stuck between Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray and Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, two greiges people often compare. In the brand apps, that means two apps, two photos and two different ways of showing color. In Muro both are in the same catalog, so you put them on the same photo of the same wall and look at them side by side.
The same goes if you're in Europe. Muro has Caparol, Brillux, Sto, Alpina, Dulux, Farrow & Ball, Tikkurila, Jotun and a long list of Polish brands, next to the US ones.
You want to see the light in your room
When Muro repaints a wall, it keeps the light from your window, the shadows and the furniture as they are in your photo. Then you can check the same color by day, at sunset and at night, with the lamps on or off. Paint changes a lot with light, so this is often what settles the choice.
You've got a long shortlist
You can put up to 12 colors on the same wall in one go, then compare the results side by side. That's how you get from a dozen candidates down to two without a pile of sample pots.
What Muro doesn't do
Muro is a subscription with no free tier, so you pay before you try it. There's no Android version. And it's built for interior walls, while Color Expert also covers exteriors.
A sensible way to use both
Browse Sherwin-Williams colors in Color Expert for free. When you're down to a handful of candidates, especially if some come from other brands, put them on your own wall in Muro. Then, whichever app you used, paint a real sample on the wall and look at it morning and evening before you buy gallons.
