How Preference Red behaves on a wall
Our estimate, worked out from the hex colour, puts the light reflectance value of this Farrow & Ball shade at about 7.6; Farrow & Ball's own figure may differ. At an estimated LRV of 7.6 this is a deep shade: it returns under an eighth of the light that reaches it, so a room painted in it leans on lamps rather than daylight. Over a pale base it usually takes an extra coat before the colour stops looking patchy. For trim that reads as a clear edge rather than a smudge, aim about 30 LRV points away — roughly LRV 38 and up. With 43 points between its strongest and weakest channel it holds a readable red cast, so it will not flatten into a neutral once it is on four walls. Order by the code, not the name, and put a test patch on the wall before you commit — a screen cannot show you how this shade behaves in your own light.
Preference Red equivalents in other paint brands
The closest color to Farrow & Ball Preference Red from each brand we carry, measured with CIEDE2000 on the manufacturers' published color values. Below 1 the difference is practically invisible; below 2 you'd only notice it with the chips side by side. Screens and printed chips aren't paint, so compare real samples before you buy. In the Muro app you can put two of them on a photo of your own wall and look at them in your light.
